Starpass Trail
The Starpass Trail is the principal overland route through the Elysian Mountains linking Dalr and Avaria. It crosses the mountain pass that Starfall Citadel was built to guard, and serves as both the main trade corridor and the chief military choke point between the two kingdoms. The trail takes its name from the Starfall Event—the celestial cataclysm that left meteorite fragments in the mountainside and led to the citadel's construction—and has shaped trade, war, and diplomacy between north and south for centuries.
Route
- Dalrian end: The trail begins on the northern side of the pass, at the threshold between the southern badlands and the mountains. Frostwatch Keep, on Dalr's side of the badlands opposite Starfall Citadel, guards the southern approach and the routes that connect to the mountain pass. Caravans and travellers bound for Avaria typically gather near Frostwatch Keep or the fringes of the Blackthorn Forest before ascending into the pass.
- The pass: The trail climbs through the Elysian Mountains, threading the high valley or defile where the Starfall Event left its mark. The route is narrow enough to be dominated by a single stronghold—Starfall Citadel—which overlooks the frigid lands of Dalr and controls movement through the pass. The Order of Starfall and its Ridge Sentinels patrol the Elysian foothills and the trail itself.
- Avarian end: On the southern side, the trail descends from the citadel into Avarian territory, where it joins roads leading to Lumenara and the rest of the kingdom. Starfall Citadel thus functions as the northernmost bastion of Avaria and the gateway through which the Starpass Trail enters the realm.
Purpose
- Trade: The trail is the main land route for trade between Dalr and Avaria. Dalr exports precious metals and gems from the Iron Range; Avaria sends food, textiles, and finished goods. Caravans and armed escorts use the Starpass Trail when mountain passes are open, supplementing maritime trade on the Lumina Sea. Starfall Citadel is described as "a beacon of stability for trade routes through the Starpass Trail."
- Military: The pass is a choke point for northern invasions. Control of the trail has been contested repeatedly: Dalrian historians record numerous attempts to seize the citadel during southern campaigns, and Dalr has long regarded it as "the lost key to the south." The Order of Starfall exists to hold the pass and prevent hostile forces from reaching Avaria.
- Pilgrimage and travel: The Citadel draws pilgrims, scholars, and artists; the trail is used by those seeking the sacred site and by diplomats, messengers, and others travelling between the two kingdoms.
History
- Origins: The pass through the Elysian Mountains likely existed as a natural corridor long before the Starfall Event. Early trade and conflict between the peoples of the north and south would have used this route.
- The Starfall Event and the Citadel: When the meteor shower struck the mountainside, the early kings of Avaria ordered a fortress built upon the sacred site. Starfall Citadel was raised at the pass, incorporating the fallen star fragments into its walls. The trail gained its name—Starpass—from the event and the citadel that now commanded it.
- The Great War: During the war between Dalr and Avaria, the fortress at the pass was the "key to the south." Dalrian forces repeatedly tried to take it; the citadel held, and the war ended in a hard-fought victory for Avaria. The trail remained in Avarian hands and became a symbol of that defence.
- Modern era: In peacetime, the Starpass Trail is again a vital trade link. Relations between Dalr and Avaria are cordial but detached; caravans move through the pass under the watch of the Order of Starfall, and the trail continues to connect Dalr to Avaria and, by extension, to other regions reached by Avarian roads.
Hazards and conditions
The trail crosses high, often frozen terrain. The cliffs around the citadel are home to Harpy Eagles and, rarely, Frost Drakes. Travel is difficult in winter; Ser Alaric Thandor, the current commander of Starfall Citadel, is famed for holding the northern pass through three winters without relief. Bandits and raiders have historically been a risk, so caravans typically travel with armed escorts and the blessing of the Jarls or the Crown.
