The Drowned Veil
Type: Hidden Tavern & Sea-Cavern Establishment
Location: Within the cliffs beneath the Noble Quarter, accessible via hidden steps along the harbor wall
Proprietor: Nymira
Reputation: Seduction, Secrets, and the Sound of the Sea
Overview
The Drowned Veil is not listed on official city maps.
Sailors learn of it through murmured directions:
“Follow the harbor wall north. Look for the worn stone steps. Don’t knock — just listen.”
At the base of the cliffs beneath the Noble Quarter stands a narrow tower entrance — smaller than the surrounding stone but older than it appears. From there, descending steps spiral into the cliffside itself, opening into a vast sea-carved cavern illuminated by lanternlight and velvet drapery.
The tavern does not sit on the sea.
It breathes with it.
Half of the Veil is carved into stone beneath the city. The other half opens into a natural sea-cave chamber where waves echo softly below a carved balcony and tiered floor.
Above that exposed cavern — hidden in shadow — lies a private chamber carved into the rock face.
That chamber belongs to Nymira.
Physical Layout
The Cliffside Tower Entrance
From the harbor wall, sailors find:
- Narrow, worn steps climbing to a modest stone tower.
- No signage.
- No guards.
- Only a subtle lantern that burns sea-blue at night.
The tower is lower than the cliffs above, making it invisible from Noble balconies.
Inside, the descent begins.
The Main Cavern Hall
The primary tavern chamber is carved directly into the cliff.
Features include:
- Velvet-draped alcoves.
- Candlelit tables carved from stone.
- A central performance stage positioned so the sea breeze carries the sound outward.
- A bar constructed from dark driftwood and polished coral.
The air smells of salt, smoke, and perfume.
The sea’s rhythm forms a constant undertone to every conversation.
The Ocean-Facing Chamber
One section of the cavern opens naturally to the sea, forming a vaulted stone arch where moonlight spills across the water.
The lower level features seating near the tide line.
Above, built into the stone, is a concealed second-story balcony chamber.
This upper room is private.
It belongs to the proprietor.
It is not part of the tavern experience.
Atmosphere
The Drowned Veil is intoxicating.
Lanternlight flickers through hanging silk. Music coils through the cavern. Laughter echoes off stone in a way that feels both close and distant.
Patrons include:
- Sailors fresh from storm.
- Nobles seeking discretion.
- Merchants seeking anonymity.
- Those looking to forget something.
- Those looking to remember too much.
It is luxurious.
It is dangerous.
It is deliberate.
Services by Moonlight
To outsiders, the Veil offers:
- Drink and imported spirits.
- Private booths for conversation.
- Music and performance.
- Companionship and indulgence.
- Discretion without question.
But the Veil is also a crossroads of shadowed exchange:
- Forged papers passed between tables.
- Smuggled goods arriving via underwater tunnels.
- Information traded beneath music’s cover.
- Blackmail material quietly archived.
- Enchanted performances that leave patrons pliable.
The Veil sees everything.
It repeats nothing.
Nymira
Proprietor of The Drowned Veil
By day, she is a rumor.
By night, she is the Veil.
Nymira’s voice carries through stone like tide through caverns. Her performances do more than entertain — they enthrall. Sailors speak of forgetting where they were seated. Nobles speak of losing hours.
She moves with effortless command of the space.
The Veil bends subtly around her presence.
Some whisper she is Fae-touched.
Others say something older watches through her eyes.
Those who meet her gaze too long often leave altered.
And not always in ways they understand.
Hidden Tunnels
Beneath the exposed sea-cavern floor lie submerged passageways connecting:
- Smuggling routes under the harbor wall.
- Narrow exits into the open sea.
- Older stone tunnels whose origin predates the Veil’s construction.
The Beacon Guard knows of some of these tunnels.
They do not know all of them.
Relationship to the Noble Quarter
The Veil sits directly beneath several noble estates.
Officially, the Noble Quarter denies any connection.
Unofficially:
- Certain nobles are seen descending the harbor wall after dusk.
- Private guards occasionally linger near the concealed steps.
- Blackmail leverage has shifted political outcomes more than once.
The Veil exists because those above allow it to.
Or because they cannot stop it.
Reputation
To sailors:
“It’s where you go when you survive.”
To nobles:
“It’s where you go when you cannot be seen.”
To criminals:
“It’s neutral ground.”
To the Watch:
“It doesn’t exist.”
Rumors & Omens
- During certain tides, the water in the sea-cave rises higher than expected — without flooding.
- Music has been heard when no musicians were present.
- Some patrons claim to dream of drowning after visiting.
- The private balcony chamber is said to overlook not just the sea — but something beneath it.
The Veil is older than it claims.
And deeper than its entrance suggests.
