Crystal Archives

Type: Maritime Library & Navigators’ Guildhall

Location: Old Town, near Founder’s Square

Affiliation: City Council of Crystalport, Avarian Navy, Registered Navigators’ Guild

Primary Function: Seafaring Records, Monster Lore, Navigational Charts, Maritime Intelligence

Overview

The Crystal Archives are the oldest scholarly institution in Crystalport, predating much of the city’s modern expansion. Located in Old Town near Founder’s Square, the Archives serve as the official repository of maritime knowledge for Avaria’s northern coast.

Within its walls are preserved:

  • Navigational charts of the Lumina Sea
  • Records of monster sightings
  • Storm pattern logs spanning centuries
  • Ship registries and trade manifests
  • Naval battle accounts
  • Explorer journals
  • Accounts of strange phenomena beyond mapped waters

To captains, the Archives are necessity.

To scholars, they are sacred.

To the wary, they are unsettling.

For every safe voyage recorded, there is a warning etched beside it.

Architecture

Unlike the elegant towers of Glimmergate or the grand estates of The Cliffs, the Crystal Archives are sturdy, fortified, and old.

The building is constructed from thick coastal stone blocks — darker than most Old Town structures — suggesting its foundations predate even the current city walls.

Features include:

  • Arched windows reinforced with salt-resistant enchantments
  • Heavy oak doors banded in iron
  • A vaulted interior ceiling painted with ancient constellations
  • Spiral staircases connecting stacked gallery levels
  • Deep stone foundations extending into the bedrock

Locals claim that the Archives were once a fortified storehouse before becoming a center of knowledge.

The Grand Chart Hall

At the heart of the Archives lies the Grand Chart Hall — a circular chamber dominated by an enormous illuminated map table of the Lumina Sea.

Embedded crystal inlays allow projection overlays of:

  • Trade routes
  • Known sea monster territories
  • Shifting storm corridors
  • Areas marked “Unverified”
  • Restricted military lanes

The map is constantly updated by registered navigators and naval officers.

Certain sectors are sealed behind administrative sigils — accessible only to high-ranking officials.

The Deep Stacks

Beneath the public floors lie the Deep Stacks — restricted vaults containing sensitive or dangerous material.

These include:

  • Accounts of abyssal creature encounters
  • Records of vanished ships
  • Sealed reports on magical sea anomalies
  • Ancient sea chants translated from pre-Avarian dialects
  • Documents referencing the Pact of the Beacon

Some documents are kept in crystal-sealed cases to prevent corruption — arcane or otherwise.

There are rumors that portions of the Deep Stacks connect to older tunnels beneath Old Town.

The Archives officially deny this.

The Navigators’ Guildhall

The upper level functions as a guildhall for licensed navigators.

Services include:

  • Chart certification
  • Route validation
  • Captain licensing
  • Reporting of sea anomalies
  • Claim verification for monster slayings

The Guild maintains a strict reporting code — falsified logs are punishable by revocation of license.

It is considered dishonorable for a captain to conceal dangerous waters.

Key Figures

Archivist Dorian Valmere

Master of Maritime Records

A meticulous human scholar in late middle age. Calm, measured, and deeply skeptical of superstition — though he keeps several locked cabinets under his personal oversight.

He believes knowledge is the city’s greatest defense.

Guildmistress Sorelle Thane

Head of the Navigators’ Guild

A seasoned sea captain with weathered hands and an unshakeable presence. She ensures navigators respect both tradition and regulation.

She has publicly clashed with certain nobles who sought to conceal trade route information.

Relationship to the Beacon

The Crystal Archives and the Beacon of Crystalport maintain an unspoken partnership.

  • Storm logs help determine when the Beacon must amplify.
  • Monster sighting patterns influence harbor warding adjustments.
  • Old Pact documents confirm the Beacon’s original oath.

It is widely believed that if something threatened the Everlight Crystal, the Archives would contain clues as to why.

Reputation

To sailors:

“If it’s not in the Archives, it didn’t happen.”

To scholars:

“The sea remembers. We merely write it down.”

To conspirators:

The Archives know too much.
