Overview

Starryglen is a woodland settlement in southern Avaria, situated at the edge of the southern forests where the open plains give way to the deeper woodlands. Known for its herbalists, quiet glades, and remarkably clear night skies, the town has long been a place of rest and reflection for travellers and a steady supplier of remedies and forest goods to the realm. It marks the transition between the cultivated heartland of Avaria and the wilder reaches of the forest.

History

The settlement was originally known as Thornwood. Over two centuries ago, during the period known as the Shadow Conflict, the area suffered significant trauma—the details of which are seldom spoken of today. In the conflict's aftermath, the community was deliberately renamed and rebuilt as Starryglen, symbolising a new beginning and a turn toward the future. Modern maps and most inhabitants know only the name Starryglen; the old name Thornwood survives mainly in historical records and in the memories of those with ties to that era. The town's inhabitants generally prefer to look forward rather than dwell on the past.

Geography

Starryglen lies in the south of Avaria, at the boundary between the open plains and the southern forests. The terrain is a mix of meadow, light woodland, and sheltered glades. The forest deepens to the south and east, while the road to Lumenara and other northern settlements runs through the plains. The location affords clear views of the night sky, for which the town is known.

Demographics

The population is modest and largely human, with a noticeable presence of wood elves and half-elves, as well as halflings and others drawn by the quiet life and the herbalist trade. Fae-touched individuals and those seeking a measure of peace are not uncommon. The community is close-knit and somewhat insular, though welcoming to respectful travellers.

Government

Starryglen is part of Avaria and subject to the Crown. Local governance is typically handled by a small council or a Crown-appointed steward, with matters of law and defence referred to the realm as needed. The Avarian Guard and regional patrols maintain order along the roads and in the broader area.

Industry & Trade

The town thrives on:

  • Herbalism: The primary trade. Starryglen's herbalists grow and gather a wide variety of plants, producing remedies, poultices, and minor alchemical ingredients sought by healers and apothecaries in Lumenara, Crystalport, and beyond.
  • Forest goods: Timber, charcoal, and non-magical forest products are gathered and sold to passing merchants.
  • Hospitality: Travellers resting on the road between the capital and the southern reaches often stop in Starryglen for a safe night and a hot meal.

Points of interest

  • The Glades: Quiet, open clearings at the edge of the forest, favoured for stargazing and quiet reflection. Locals and visitors alike gather here on clear nights.
  • Herbalist Row: A lane of workshops and stillrooms where the town's herbalists prepare remedies and sell wares.
  • The Old Road: The main thoroughfare through the settlement, linking the plains to the south; well maintained and patrolled.

Architecture

Buildings are low and practical, favouring timber and stone. Roofs are often thatched or shingled; windows are modest. The style is simple and in keeping with the woodland setting, with little of the grandeur of Lumenara or the maritime bustle of Crystalport. A few older foundations and cellars hint at the town's rebuilding after the Shadow Conflict, but the present-day town is deliberately unassuming.

Climate

Temperate, with warm summers and cool winters. The position at the forest edge brings slightly more moisture and shade than the open plains. Clear nights are common, especially in the drier seasons—hence the town's reputation for stargazing.

Natural Resources

  • Herbs and medicinal plants: The primary resource; cultivated in gardens and gathered from the forest edge.
  • Timber: Sustainably cut from the fringes of the southern forest.
  • Fresh water: Streams and wells supply the town and the surrounding farmland.
