Overview

The Watchtower Tavern and Inn is a Southern Trade Road landmark in Avaria. Once a military watchtower guarding the kingdom's southern approach, it has been partially restored and now operates as a lively roadside inn, connecting Avaria to Kokoro. Remnants of its former purpose remain visible within its aging stone walls, giving the place a distinct character that draws travellers and traders alike.

Location

The Watchtower sits in the western part of Avaria, on a branch road that links to the main thoroughfare running between the coast and the interior. It lies south-southeast of the river-valley town of Aethelburg, west of Silverwood, and northeast of Crystalport, making it a natural waystation for traffic moving between the port, the inland settlements, and the southern trade route toward Kokoro. Caravans and travellers often stop here before joining the main east–west road or branching toward the southern border.

History

The structure was originally built as a military watchtower to guard Avaria's southern approach—a role that diminished as the kingdom's borders stabilised and relations with neighbouring realms (including Kokoro) grew more settled. Rather than abandon the site, it was partially restored and repurposed as an inn, retaining the old stonework and the watchtower itself where possible. The result is a blend of martial heritage and roadside hospitality.

Role and Reputation

The Watchtower serves as a key stop on the Southern Trade Road, offering rest, food, and shelter to merchants, guards, and travellers moving between Avaria and Kokoro. Its position makes it a hub for news and gossip from both the coast and the interior. The atmosphere is typically lively and welcoming, with the aging stone walls and visible remnants of the original tower giving the inn a distinctive, slightly rugged character that many regulars appreciate.
