Old Avaria was a human capital in the Avarisburg region during the ancient Runeous era. It is the Avaria of the original Runeous story, centuries after a devastating war had destroyed much of human civilization. The later kingdom of Avaria, founded in 120 TRA with Lumenara as its capital, took its name from this older city. The two are separated by thousands of years; their shared name does not establish an unbroken government or royal line.

City and society

As its population rebuilt, Old Avaria rose in levels: tall buildings and elevated walkways connected markets, airship docks, government buildings, a Runic Academy, and military facilities. Surviving runestones and new machines supplied much of its power. Its scholars were still recovering knowledge lost in the wars.

The city was governed through an Avarian government and army. An older monarchy and its knights retained their own records and loyalties; the Institute studied runes and history. These are institutions of the ancient city, distinct from the later Hartwright kingdom's court and guard.

Surrounding region

The fishing village of Strondheim lay to the south, near an old battlefield where runestones could be salvaged. Eldergreen Forest lay beyond it. The forest's Jacawi refuge and Eme's first contact with humans are associated with the site later known as Faelight, near Silverfall Cascade in the Avarian Forest. Whether the old village or city survive as visible ruins in the later kingdom remains to be established.

Chronology

The original Runeous account begins roughly 600 years after a great war. Its exact year within the Runeous era and the precise relationship between the old account's Runic Wars and the Veil incursions remain open. No Hartwright-era institution or modern city is assumed to exist in this ancient period.
