House Castillo is a cadet noble line of Avaria, cousin to the Hartwright monarchy through a founding-era marriage compact. The family is best known for castellan postings at major crown fortresses—most prominently the Eastern Border Keep (commonly called Eastwatch)—where they run the inner household, host diplomacy, and represent royal interest while military officers hold walls and gates. Their motto is "Stone keeps faith."

Castillos are not primarily a Lumenara merchant or court faction; they are a household nobility trained to make stone feel like home for kings, envoys, and garrisons alike. They maintain a townhouse in the Noble District for capital seasons and family business, but their prestige is tied to residence on post: great halls set for Kokoran precision and Avarian pragmatism, corridors that can separate rival wings without insult, and domestic staffs drilled to standards that diplomacy mistakes for ease.

Publicly the Castillos are cordial, watchful hosts. Privately they treat every frontier keep as a living border—cordial by default, screening by habit, ready to mobilise household and garrison together when the gate bell changes tempo.

History

Founding compact — When the Hartwright line consolidated the eastern marches, a Castillo marriage brought the family into royal kinship and established the pattern of cousin-houses holding fortress households in the crown's name.

Age of Expansion — Castillos mapped domestic protocols for relay forts along post roads, codifying how castellan authority overlaps with military command—a tension still visible at Eastwatch between drill time and dinner time.

Repurposing of Eastwatch — As peace with Kokoro held, the Eastern Border Keep shifted from pure siege role to diplomatic bastion. Castillos were instrumental in redesigning inner state rooms for neutral talks, trade coordination, and high-status hosting away from the capital.

Present day (530 TRA) — Lord Rodric Castillo serves as castellan of Eastwatch with Lady Vivienne Castillo managing the inner household. Their daughters Lady Annalia Castillo and Lady Mia Castillo are raised between frontier duty and capital education.
