Shrine of Lucien's Coin

From Faeloria
(Redirected from Shrine of Lucien’s Coin)

The Shrine of Lucien's Coin & The Gilded Clover

Type: Open-Air Shrine & Gambling Hall

Location: Eastern Harbor Quarter, near the central dock promenade

Affiliation: Temple of Lucien (informal), Independent Establishment

Reputation: Fortune, Folly, and Fickle Fate

Overview

Perched along the lively docks of Crystalport's eastern harbor, between the Moonpearl Market and the waterfront thoroughfare, stands a place where fortune and folly walk hand-in-hand:

The Shrine of Lucien's Coin and its sister establishment, The Gilded Clover.

It is customary for sailors to pause at the shrine before setting sail, merchants before signing contracts, and gamblers before testing fate.

The locals say: "First you pray, then you pay — such is the way of Lucien's day." And most follow the ritual.

The Shrine of Lucien's Coin

Appearance

The shrine consists of a circular stone fountain filled with gently rippling seawater drawn from the harbor. At its center stands a statue of Lucien — depicted as a grinning rogue mid-coin flip, a four-leaf clover pinned to his lapel.

Magical seashell lanterns cast soft blue and gold light at night, making the water shimmer like starlight.

Beneath the surface:

  • Coins glint in layered stacks.
  • Some are ancient.
  • Some bear foreign mint marks.
  • Some have no mint at all.

Iron hooks around the fountain are wrapped with ribbons, trinkets, and small tokens.

Traditions

Visitors customarily:

  • Toss a coin before gambling, sailing, proposing, or undertaking risk.
  • Tie a ribbon when making a wish of the heart.
  • Whisper the old prayer:

"Fortune's hand, be ever kind."

Passing the shrine without offering at least a copper is considered extremely bad luck.

Even skeptical captains drop something.

Rumored Blessing

Those who make an earnest offering and recite the prayer may gain subtle favor.

Optional Mechanic:

Once per week, the offering grants advantage on a single luck-related roll within 24 hours.

Madame Tamsin claims Lucien never gives without taking later.

The Gilded Clover

Gambling Hall & Tavern

Just steps from the shrine stands The Gilded Clover — a two-story gambling hall whose painted sign depicts a golden clover formed from overlapping coins.

Music and laughter spill onto the dock promenade nightly.

Interior

The Clover is cozy but energetic:

  • Oak beams strung with colorful pennants.
  • Dice tables and card stations.
  • A raised stage for live performances.
  • Green-and-gold lanternlight casting playful shadows.

Private rooms upstairs host higher-stakes games.

Some doors are locked.

Proprietor

Nara "Lucky" Linnet

A sharp-witted halfling with an uncanny streak of fortune. Nara runs the Clover with charm and discipline.

Her bracelet of silver four-leaf clovers is said to have been won in a game against a Fae gambler years ago.

She neither confirms nor denies the story.

Madame Tamsin

Shrine caretaker and occasional fortune-reader. She watches the tables from a quiet corner seat.

Some say she knows when Lucien is truly present.

Games Offered

  • Luck's Turn – A high-stakes bluffing card game.
  • Clover's Roll – Dice with occasional minor magical surges.
  • The Coin's Edge – Double-or-nothing magical coin flips, with subtle house enchantments.
  • Starfall Chase – Enchanted projection races of tiny star-creatures.

The house always wins eventually.

But not always tonight.

Special Rule

Patrons who first make an offering at the shrine receive a Blessed Clover Token, allowing a single re-roll on their first loss of the evening.

Refusing the token is considered insulting to Lucien.

Superstitions

  • If the bells of the Gilded Clover ring on their own, Lucien is said to be in the house.
  • When that happens, fortunes swing wildly.
  • It is believed that gambling without praying first results in losing more than coin.

Sailors swear by it.

Relationship to the City

The Shrine and Clover sit at a crossroads of:

  • Moonpearl's nightly trade.
  • Dockworkers finishing shifts.
  • Nobles slumming in disguise.
  • Smugglers testing luck before risky runs.
  • Agents from the Drowned Veil observing quietly.

The Beacon Guard keeps a casual watch.

Portwatch Keep tolerates it.

The Temple of Lucien in Glimmergate pretends it does not compete.

Rumors

  • A cursed coin occasionally appears in the fountain.
  • A gambler once wagered a memory — and lost it.
  • Nara keeps a ledger that records more than bets.
  • Madame Tamsin knows which offerings sink… and which float.
