Overview
Starfall Citadel stands as the northernmost bastion of Avaria, a fortress hewn from mountain stone and starlight. Perched atop the windswept cliffs at the edge of the Elysian Mountains, it overlooks the frigid lands of Dalr beyond. Its walls shimmer faintly at night, said to be infused with fragments from a celestial event known as the Starfall, giving the fortress both its name and its mythical resilience.
The Citadel is home to the elite Order of Starfall, a knightly order sworn to guard the kingdom from threats emerging across the northern expanse. It is both a symbol of divine protection and mortal vigilance—a monument to Avaria’s strength at the edge of the world.
History
According to Avarian chronicles, the Citadel’s origins trace back to the Starfall Event, a meteor shower of divine magnitude that illuminated Avaria’s skies centuries ago. Legends claim the meteors were celestial beings sent by Chronos himself to protect Avaria from a great unseen threat.
When the dust settled, fragments of these “fallen stars” were discovered embedded in the mountainside, glowing faintly with celestial energy. The early kings of Avaria ordered a fortress built upon the sacred site, incorporating the remnants into its very foundations.
Over time, Starfall Citadel became both a military fortress and a shrine to divine guardianship. Its walls, imbued with meteorite essence, are said to resist both magic and siegecraft alike.
Dalrian historians record numerous failed attempts to seize the Citadel during their southern campaigns, noting that even when surrounded, its “walls glowed with the light of the heavens”.
Architecture
The Citadel is a seamless fusion of magic and stone. Tall spires pierce the clouds, each tipped with crystalline fragments from the original meteorite. The outer walls are engraved with celestial runes that shimmer when moonlight touches them.
A vast observatory crowns the central tower, where Avarian scholars and mages track stellar movements—believing that the stars still whisper to those who listen.
Beneath the fortress lies the Celestial Vault, a deep chamber housing star-forged relics and enchanted arms used only in Avaria’s gravest hours.
Government & Garrison
The fortress is administered by the Order of Starfall, an autonomous chivalric order answering directly to the Crown of Lumenara.
Its knights—known as Starbound Sentinels—undergo rigorous training in both martial and magical disciplines. The current commander, Ser Alaric Thandor, is famed for holding the northern pass through three winters without relief.
The Order’s structure:
- Grand Marshal of the Star – Supreme commander of the Citadel
- Lumin Wardens – Mage-knights maintaining the Citadel’s celestial wards
- Ridge Sentinels – Scouts and rangers patrolling the Elysian foothills
Defenses
- Meteorite Walls: Reinforced with divine metal fragments, resistant to magic and siege.
- Starforged Ballistae: Massive enchanted siege engines that fire radiant bolts of pure energy.
- Runic Shields: Active wards projected by the Lumin Wardens during attacks.
- Harpy Eagle Aeries: Tamed avian sentinels trained to scout and strike from the skies.
Notable Features
- The Celestial Hall: Grand chamber lined with constellations in silver and gold leaf, used for ceremonies and diplomacy.
- The Meteor Chapel: Sacred site built where the first star fragment struck the earth, dedicated to Chronos and Ariana.
- The Frozen Ramparts: Northern battlements perpetually dusted with starlit frost, believed to never melt.
Myths & Legends
The Phantom Knight:
Tales speak of a spectral warrior who roams the ramparts under moonlight, clad in ancient Avarian armor. He is said to be the spirit of a knight who fell defending the Citadel from a monstrous incursion, eternally standing guard over Avaria.
The Starfall Prophecy:
Some claim that when the stars once again fall upon Faeloria, the Citadel’s walls will ignite with celestial flame and a new age of heroes will rise to defend the realm.
Relations & Importance
Starfall Citadel serves as the principal frontier between Avaria and Dalr, acting as a choke point for northern invasions and a beacon of stability for trade routes through the Starpass Trail.
While Avaria views it as sacred ground, Dalr regards it as the lost key to the south—its capture having been attempted countless times without success. This unspoken tension continues to define diplomatic relations between the two kingdoms.
Wildlife & Surroundings
The icy cliffs around the Citadel are home to Harpy Eagles, whose screeches echo across the peaks, and Frost Drakes, rarely seen but feared by sentries on night patrol.
During clear nights, the auroras above the Citadel’s towers create a spectacle known as the Crown of Stars, drawing pilgrims, scholars, and artists from across Faeloria.
