Astral Plane

The Astral Plane is the border state between the Sunworld (mortal realm) and the Celestial vantage—the domain of divine observation. In the cosmology of The Realms of Faeloria, it is one of four such thresholds: passage between the Celestial realm and the Sunworld is highly improbable, and the Astral is where the two meet. It is the realm of divine witness and the Ascended—mortals who have undergone apotheosis and now dwell beyond the mortal sphere.

Place in the Cosmology

The Sunworld does not adjoin the other layered realms directly. Between the mortal realm and each of the others lies a border state. The Astral Plane is the border of the Celestial vantage. The gods influence the Great Cycle but are not wholly bound by it; they observe from beyond the Sunworld. The Astral is the threshold where that observation touches the mortal realm—where Alcor holds his vigil and where the Ascended dwell after apotheosis.

Inhabitants and Significance

Alcor (The Fallen Guardian) — A Celestial who watches over the mortal realm holds his vigil in the Astral Plane. He borders the mortal realm from this threshold, neither fully of the Celestial nor of the Sunworld.
The Ascended — Mortals who have undergone apotheosis—transformation into divine or near-divine state—dwell in the Astral Plane after ascending. Natsuko, who ascended to godhood at 10 TRA, is among them. They exist in a state between mortal memory and divine permanence.

The Astral is not a realm of punishment or reward in the same sense as the Infernal Plane or the Underworld; it is the margin where the divine gaze meets the world of becoming, and where those who have transcended mortality find their place in the cosmology.

Relationship to Other Border States

The Astral Plane is one of four borders between the Sunworld and the layered realms:

Astral Plane — Border of the Celestial; divine observation and the Ascended.
Twilight — Border of the Moonworld; reflection and Fae.
The Penumbra — Border of the Umbral Veil; echo and unchosen possibility.
Infernal Plane — Border of the Underworld; the unresolved.

Passage from the Celestial realm into the Sunworld is highly improbable; the Astral marks the limit of where such passage is even conceivable.
