House Harthaven
House Harthaven is a great martial house of Lumenara whose prestige rests on kingdom-wide command rather than the intimate sword-work of the Royal Guard. For two centuries they have produced Lord Commanders, strategists, and academy instructors who shape Avaria's military doctrine. Their motto is "The realm is the hearth we defend."
Overview
Where House Meryndor guards the monarch's person, the Harthavens guard the realm's borders, garrisons, and war plans. Their manor—Harthaven Hall—stands near the Royal Military Academy, and their family crest (a white tower above crossed spears) appears on academy gates and officer commissions throughout the kingdom.
The house is disciplined, politically astute, and willing to spend political capital on fortifications, militia training, and navy coordination with Crystalport. They support the Crown but are less absolutist than the Meryndors: Dame Katerina Harthaven has publicly argued that over-centralization weakens frontier readiness—a view that puts her at odds with House Ashford on taxation for rural garrisons.
History
- Age of Expansion — Harthaven officers mapped the kingdom's eastern roads and established relay forts later absorbed into the network serving Eastern Border Keep.
- The Great War — The house's finest hour and its deepest wound. Lord Commander Aldric Harthaven held the northern passes until Starfall Citadel could be reinforced; three of his sons died in the campaign. Post-war, the family endowed the Royal Military Academy in their memory.
- Modern era — Harthavens brokered joint drills between the Avarian Navy and land garrisons, easing friction between Lumenara and Crystalport. They remain sceptical of Dalr's cordial detachment, advocating prepared neutrality rather than trust.
- Present day (530 TRA) — Dame Katerina Harthaven serves as Lord Commander of The Avarian Guard, the highest active rank below the monarch. Her brother Lord Beren Harthaven manages the family's academy patronage and council work.
Key family members
- Dame Katerina Harthaven (Lord Commander of the Avarian Guard) — The kingdom's senior field commander; brilliant, demanding, and respected by soldiers. She advises King Thaddeus on deployments, militia law, and coordination with Starfall Citadel.
- Lord Beren Harthaven (Patriarch by courtesy) — Handles estates, academy funding, and Council of Lords business while his sister commands in the field. A skilled negotiator with ties to House Thalridge of Crystalport on naval matters.
- Lady Olena Harthaven (Matriarch) — Former academy instructor in siege craft; now chairs a charitable fund for widows of the Great War.
- Captain Aiden Trevelyan — Not a Harthaven by blood, but the family's most famous protégé: once widely named as a rising Guard commander, he now leads a capital company under Harthaven patronage before expected promotion. (See Avarian Guard structure for current ranks.)
- Ser Lysa Harthaven (Niece) — Instructor at the Royal Military Academy; specialises in logistics and supply lines to Lunaridge.
Roles and responsibilities
- Leadership pipeline for The Avarian Guard officers and Lord Commander succession (by merit and royal appointment, historically dominated by the house).
- Patronage of the Royal Military Academy—curriculum review, scholarships for rural recruits, and commissioning standards.
- Council advocacy for border fortifications, militia readiness, and navy–army cooperation.
- Liaison with Order of Starfall on northern defence policy.
Assets and holdings
- Harthaven Hall — Noble District estate with academy views; hosts officer banquets and strategic councils.
- Academy endowments — Named halls, lecture funds, and a memorial grove for fallen commanders.
- Eastern road toll rights — Legacy charters granting a portion of trade-route fees for garrison maintenance (contested periodically by House Ashford).
- Garrison appointments — Hereditary recommendations for commands at key inland forts, subject to royal approval.
Connections
- Avarian Royal Family — Trusted military advisors; Crown Princess Seraphina Hartwright is rumoured to study strategy under Dame Katerina informally.
- House Meryndor — Rivalry over precedence; united during Dalr crises.
- House Thalridge — Naval-policy allies in Crystalport.
- House Ashford — Frequent budget disputes over tax allocation to garrisons vs. treasury reserves.
