Gifted magic

From Faeloria

Gifted magic

Gifted magic (or bestowed magic) in Faeloria is power granted by an external entity in exchange for a bond-devotion, an oath, or a formal pact. The caster acts as a conduit rather than generating the magic themselves. It is one of the four broad ways of channelling magic.

Types

Divine magic
Gods and goddesses grant power to clergy, paladins, and devoted followers. The magic is often framed as holy or sacred and is tied to the deity's domains and commandments. The Pantheon of Faeloria-Chronos, Ariana, Lucien, Eriana, Cryos, Aros, Inuera, Alcor-shapes religious practice across the realm. Organisations such as The Luminary Circle in Avaria dedicate themselves to the worship of Ariana and the spiritual guidance of the populace. Divine magic typically requires adherence to faith and doctrine.
Pact magic
Other beings-Fae, demons, void beings, and the like-may form pacts with mortals. Pact magic is often more transactional, with the entity's nature narrowing the kind of magic available (e.g. holy, occult, elemental). Beings of the Infernal Plane (the unquiet border of the Underworld) are a common source of such pacts; the Order of the Purple Rose in Avaria exists in part to combat demonic and dark forces that arise from or exploit these bonds. Pact-bound casters may be accepted, tolerated, or persecuted depending on the entity and local attitudes.

Bond and restrictions

The nature of the bond (oath, pact, devotion, or bargain) and the entity's nature often narrow the kind of magic available. Usage follows the entity's themes and any restrictions or taboos imposed by the tradition. Divine casters are usually integrated into religious and civic life; pact-bound casters may face legal or social limits in some regions. See Limits and costs of magic for the costs of pacts and divine obligation.
