Avarian Royal Court

The Avarian Royal Court is the governing household, advisory circle, and ceremonial centre of the Hartwright monarchy in Avaria. It is seated in the Royal Castle of Lumenara—also known as the Royal Hartwright Palace—in the capital's Noble District, where the monarch receives nobles, guild masters, foreign envoys, and Fae representatives, and where much of the kingdom's law, diplomacy, and patronage is brokered in practice as well as in decree.

The court is not a single chamber: it is the throne, the Council of Lords, the officers who keep the palace running, the noble factions that attend audiences, and the customs—Naming Day, knighting rites, festival observances—that bind the crown to Ariana, the Fae, and the people of the realm.

Seat and presence

The court's principal seat is the Royal Castle in Lumenara, overlooking the River Avar and the Noble District manors of the great houses. State rooms, council halls, the royal library wing, chapel precincts, and the inner wards guarded by the Royal Guard form the public and private geography of Hartwright rule.

When protocol or security demands a frontier venue, the crown may stage court business elsewhere—most notably at the Eastern Border Keep (Eastwatch), where House Castillo holds castellan household for Avarian–Kokoran diplomacy. Such postings extend court custom without moving the capital.

The monarch and royal household

Day-to-day governance rests with King Thaddeus Hartwright and Queen Isolde Hartwright, supported by their children and the wider royal family. The king holds supreme military authority over the Avarian Guard; the queen's scholarship and educational reforms have shaped court culture toward literacy, archives, and Fae-lore policy.

Princes and princesses attend audiences, patronise institutions, and represent the crown abroad—Crown Prince Elden Hartwright notably strengthened ties with Kokoro through a royal visit—while staff and guard officers manage the household's visible order.

Council of Lords

The Council of Lords advises the monarch on trade, defence, magic, and the affairs of the realm. Seats are held by title, office, or royal appointment rather than by strict inheritance, but in practice Lumenara's noble houses dominate its factions. Guild masters from the HighGrad Trading Company, the Craftsmen's Alliance, and capital trade syndicates sit beside lords.

Permanent great-house influence is summarised on Noble Houses of Lumenara; recurring blocs include the Crown Compact (Meryndor, Harthaven, Ashford), the Lantern Pact (Whitmere, Baomont, Solcrest), and the neutral ceremonial role of House Thornfield.

Royal household administration

The royal household is the domestic and ceremonial apparatus of the Hartwright court. It is distinct from the Royal Guard (armed protection) and from the Council of Lords (policy), though all three intersect daily in the castle.

At the head of household operations is the Chief of Staff, who answers to the monarch on audience calendars, wing coordination, and the integration of chapel, guard, and domestic corps. The King's Chamberlain holds wing keys, progress itineraries, and liaison with castellan households—most importantly House Castillo at Eastwatch when the crown travels east. Lord Edric Meryndor (House Meryndor) serves as Castellan of the Inner Precincts, stewarding the royal family's private wards and vault access in concert with the Royal Guard.

Frontier keeps mirror the capital pattern on a smaller scale: castellan, matron of the inner household, head butler, housekeeper, and kitchenmaster—standards codified by Castillo service and visible in the Eastwatch household of Watson, head butler under Lord Rodric Castillo.

Diplomacy and audiences

Foreign relations are conducted through embassies in partner capitals and through audiences at the Royal Castle. Kokoran envoys are frequent guests; Dalr contact is cordial but guarded. The court prefers neutral frontier venues for sensitive talks when capital spectacle would hinder negotiation—hence the importance of Eastwatch and Castillo hospitality.

Guild and merchant petitions, HighGrad trade charters, and noble inheritance disputes (often mediated with House Lethwell records) fill the calendar between state banquets and festival obligations. The Royal Herald and Usher of the Council Chamber prepare rank and seating so that insult is never accidental—Ysabel Lethwell's honorific work is especially sought before Eastwatch summits.

Naming Day — On a child's first birthday, the Fae Emissary may choose a name, honouring the bond between Avaria and the Fae.
Knighting ceremony — Squires complete a royal quest; Lady Sabine Meryndor prepares the white cloak as Master of Ceremonies, and the Chief of Staff presents it amid the Royal Guard and citizens—a rite described in Avarian knighting tradition.
Fae festivals — Court observances include the Glow of Ariana and the Veil Dance; Thornfield and the Luminary Circle organise much of the capital's religious calendar.
Royal progress — The monarch may travel with household, guard, and select nobles to fortresses or allied cities, temporarily extending court protocol beyond Lumenara; the King's Chamberlain drafts itineraries and the castellan household at destination receives the inner corps.
