Noble Houses of Lumenara

The Noble District of Lumenara is home to Avaria's most influential mortal bloodlines—families whose fortunes, titles, and obligations were forged during the kingdom's founding, tested in the Great War against Dalr, and renewed in the post-war renaissance that raised the Arcanum Lyceum, the University of Lumenara, and the Royal Military Academy. Unlike the harbour nobility of Crystalport, Lumenara's great houses are defined by proximity to the Crown: they advise the throne through the Council of Lords, supply commanders to the Royal Guard and Avarian Guard, endow the capital's institutions, and broker the policies that shape trade, magic, and defence across Avaria.

The Council of Lords

The Council of Lords is not a hereditary chamber in the strict sense—seats are held by title, office, or royal appointment—but in practice Lumenara's noble houses dominate its permanent factions. Guild masters (notably from the HighGrad Trading Company, the Craftsmen's Alliance, and the capital's metalwork and textile syndicates) sit beside lords; the balance of power shifts with each reign, but the six houses below have held council influence for generations.

Inter-house alliances and tensions

• The Crown Compact — An informal coalition of House Meryndor, House Harthaven, and House Ashford that reliably supports royal prerogative on defence and taxation. House Velbridge of Crystalport and other western-autonomy factions oppose many of its trade measures.

• The Lantern Pact — House Whitmere and House Solcrest often align on education and magical policy, reflecting shared investment in the University and the Lyceum. They frequently mediate between the Crown and the Fae Realm on matters too delicate for soldiers or merchants.

• The Thornfield Concord — House Thornfield maintains cordial ties with all factions; its neutrality in economic disputes makes it the preferred host for weddings, treaty signings, and Naming Day ceremonies attended by the Fae Emissary.

• Meryndor–Harthaven rivalry — Both houses serve the Crown in war, but the Royal Guard's prestige and the Lord Commander's authority sometimes collide. The rivalry is professional, rarely violent, and the monarch traditionally balances appointments between the two lines.

Regional ties

Lumenara's nobles hold estates and interests beyond the capital: mining contracts with Lunaridge, agricultural levies from Sunfield, textile patronage in Moonveil, and—most contested—oversight of coastal trade with Crystalport. Houses Velbridge, Thalridge, and Mariseld in the port city are frequent allies or adversaries depending on the issue; House Ashford in particular treats Crystalport's push for local tariff control as a threat to Crown revenue.
