Learned magic
Learned magic in Faeloria is magic acquired through study, ritual, and practice. Unlike innate magic, it does not require being born attuned-though the magically attuned often learn more quickly. Learned casters channel magic from the world: they sense and shape the ambient magical energies that permeate Faeloria, using incantations, formulas, and structured channelling. It is one of the four broad ways of channelling magic.
Method
Learned magic is associated with academies, grimoires, and long apprenticeships. Spells are treated as reproducible arts: with the right words, gestures, and understanding, the right effect can be achieved. Mastery depends on intellect, discipline, and access to teaching and texts. The tradition contrasts with innate magic in that power is drawn from without (the environment) rather than from within, and relies on precision and technique rather than instinct.
Institutions
Institutions of magical learning exist in many regions. The most prestigious in Avaria is the Arcanum Lyceum in Lumenara, which attracts the brightest minds and produces esteemed scholars, enchanters, and battle mages. Similar academies and guilds operate elsewhere in Faeloria, often serving as points of prestige, intrigue, or tension with religious or innate-magic traditions. The Shadow Conflict led to the establishment of the Arcane Academy in part to prevent magical fractures and to train casters in the responsible use of power; the Arcanum Lyceum continues that legacy.
In society
Learned casters often serve as scholars, advisors, healers, or military support. They may work for kingdoms, guilds, or corporations, or operate as freelancers. Access to education can be limited by admission, cost, or geography, making learned magic a path that rewards both talent and opportunity.
