Magic in Faeloria

Magic in Faeloria is the collective term for the supernatural forces and practices that allow individuals or objects to produce magical effects. Faeloria is a high-fantasy setting in which magic is common; most people can interact with it in some form, and low-level spellcasting is widespread. Power is distributed on a pyramidal curve: the majority of practitioners operate at modest levels, with progressively rarer individuals achieving greater skill and power. Magic is woven into everyday life-from Runic Power Stones powering lights and waygates to magic scribe stations that let even non-casters send messages across the realm-and is considered a gift from Ariana, the goddess of arcane and motherhood.

Sources of magic

Magic is not drawn from a single wellspring. Practitioners may tap one or more of four broad sources:

Source Description
Within the caster Innate magic-power born from bloodline, conception, or birth conditions. The caster is the well. See Innate magic.
The world around Ambient magic-the weave of energies permeating Faeloria, channelled through study and ritual. See Learned magic.
External entities Bestowed magic-gods, Fae, demons, or other beings grant power through pacts, oaths, or devotion. See Gifted magic.
Objects and places Bound magic-magic stored in runes, scrolls, items, and enchanted locations. See Runic Power Stones, Maginite.

These sources often overlap: an innate fire-sorcerer might wield a wand to focus their power, a cleric might use both divine magic and a messaging scroll, and a learned wizard might carry runestones for emergencies.

Who can use magic

Magic is widely accessible in some form. Most people can interact with it indirectly-through objects such as runes, scrolls, or public messaging stations-without being spellcasters. True spellcasting forms a pyramidal distribution: low-level users are common, mid-tier casters fewer, and high-level or exceptionally powerful individuals rare. Innate talent (being magically attuned) eases learning and can allow greater raw output, but lack of attunement does not bar someone from learning magic; those without a bloodline or birth-gift typically need more time, study, and discipline. Gifted magic depends on forming and maintaining a bond with an entity.

How magic is used

Magic is channelled-drawn from a source and shaped by intent. The means vary:

  • Words - incantations, prayers, oaths, or verbal triggers
  • Gesture - somatic components, ritual movements, or symbolic acts
  • Focus - staff, holy symbol, wand, rune, or other item that directs or amplifies
  • Knowledge - formulas, symbols, rites, or mental discipline

Innate users often rely on instinct and internal focus; learned users on incantations and precise channelling; gifted users on religious or pact-specific rituals; item-users activate pre-made magic via the object.

Channeling magic

Four broad ways of channelling magic define how casters obtain and wield power:

  • Innate magic - Power born with the caster; channelled from within. Often elemental; tied to bloodline or birth conditions. Sorcerer-like.
  • Learned magic - Acquired through study and practice; channelled from the world. Associated with academies such as the Arcanum Lyceum in Lumenara.
  • Gifted magic - Granted by an external entity (divine or pact). The caster acts as a conduit. Tied to the Pantheon or to pacts with Fae, demons, or void beings.
  • Bound magic - Stored in Runic Power Stones, scrolls, wands, and enchanted items. Usable by anyone with the object or the right knowledge; see Maginite and Runic Power Stones.

Technology and infrastructure

Magic is built into everyday technology. Enchanted stations, linked objects, and bound locations support messaging, security, and coordination. Runic Power Stones and Maginite-based systems power lights, converters, city wards, and waygates. Scrolls and single-use items deliver standardised effects-messages, alarms, basic healing-without requiring a high-level caster on site. Infrastructure, crafts, and defence frequently rely on runes and enchanted items.

Communication

Long-distance and near-instant communication is routine. Civilian magic scribe stations allow even lower-class citizens to send written messages between linked locations; military forces use linked boards and dedicated scribes to coordinate the chain of command. Limits and costs

Magic is not unlimited. Personal fatigue and overdraw affect all casters; bound magic (e.g. Runic Power Stones) can suffer over-saturation or lattice stress if misused. Religion and law restrict certain practices; pact and divine magic carry obligations.
