Origins and history of magic

From Faeloria

Origins and history of magic

The origins and history of magic in Faeloria trace from divine and cosmic creation through the first mortal encounters with the arcane, the Dawn of Magic era, and the development of stable rune-craft and institutions. This article summarizes the canonical account drawn from the Timeline, the Pantheon, and related sources. For the era when mortals first systematized and tamed raw magic, see Dawn of Magic.

Divine and cosmic origins

Chronos and the framework

At -1,000,000 BFA (Timeline), The Beginning: Chronos creates time, matter, and the Mortal Realm-the Sunworld (Material Plain). He establishes sequence, inevitability, and the structure of reality. There is not yet "magic" as mortals understand it-only the scaffolding upon which Ariana would layer resonance and arcane energy.

Ariana and the birth of the arcane

At -900,000 BFA, The Creation: Ariana and Cryos emerge from Chronos' design. Ariana layers the Moonworld (Fae Realms) upon the Sunworld and imbues the world with arcane energy. Where Chronos established sequence, Ariana established resonance. Many scholars believe all spellcasting originates from her divine breath-the "First Song" that gave life to magic itself (Ariana). Her magic flows through every ley line; ley lines, enchanted forests, and liminal zones form the natural geography of magical concentration. The Pantheon teaches that if the Moonworld stagnates, magic destabilizes-arcane energy is tied to the health of both Sunworld and Moonworld.

Moonworld and the Fae

The Moonworld was designed to preserve magical continuity, reflect mortal experience, stabilize arcane flows, and prevent existential stagnation (Moonworld). The first natural wielders of magic in the cosmos are the Fae-Ariana's children-whose existence is bound to resonance. Mortal magic taps the same arcane essence that Ariana set in motion and that the Moonworld helps stabilize.

Umbral Veil and Maginite

At -900,000 BFA the Umbral Veil (realm of echo) also forms; no god claims it fully. By -200,000 BFA the Veil presses on the Sunworld; entities of paradox occasionally seek to manifest. Maginite is held to precipitate from the collision of celestial and material energies and concentrates along ley lines and liminal zones-the same geography shaped by Ariana. It is both a product of cosmic structure and the substance that makes Runic Power Stones and bound magic possible.

First age: magic in the world

At -500,000 BFA the Sunworld is filled with mortal life. The Fae flourish by -300,000 BFA. Mortals enter a world already charged with arcane energy; first encounters likely included innate awakenings, divine revelation, and contact with the Fae at thin places such as Twilight (the border where Fae magic bleeds into the mortal realm). At -400,000 BFA ("Mortal explorers") mortals discover gateways into other planes-a milestone for systematic mortal engagement with magic. The first mortal spellcaster or "first spell" is left deliberately vague in canon. At -100,000 BFA, Ariana, Lucien, and Eriana give rise to Alcor to protect Sunworld and Moonworld from the Veil; his ward and later fall and return shape how mortals and Fae experience arcane crisis.

Dawn of Magic

The Dawn of Magic is the mortal era when raw magic was volatile and dangerous and was gradually tamed by the discovery of Maginite and the invention of runic discipline. It is placed within the period of Mortal explorers (-400,000 BFA), when mortals actively sought the mysteries of their world and connections to other realms. Key developments include: early struggles with volatile raw magic; discovery of Maginite in mountain veins; ancient scholars (linked to the early Baomont tradition) deciphering runes as the "frequency" of magic and inscribing control into Maginite; and the first successful Runic Power Stones, which replaced raw spell-weaving with a stable infrastructure. For full detail, see Dawn of Magic.

Development over time

From divine breath to mortal craft: magic originates in Ariana's resonance; the first wielders are the Fae. Mortals first encounter magic through innate awakening, devotion, and Fae contact; the Dawn of Magic sees runes and Maginite harnessed into stable infrastructure. By -10 BFA mages coordinate for the great gathering. In TRA, the Year of the green comet (200 TRA) inspires arcane exploration; the Shadow Conflict (250-300 TRA) sees mortal-Fae cooperation and the founding of the Arcane Academy; the Scholar's revolution (480 TRA) brings academies and advances in magic. The Chronicles of Faeloria (Faefall) establish that innate or divine-touched bloodlines can carry the legacy of the gods. The Twilight Mandate and Law of Resonant Passage formalize balance and the dangers of artificial crossing. In the current age (circa 530 TRA), magic remains rooted in Ariana's First Song and the layered cosmology, with Runic Power Stones, scribe stations, and institutions such as the Arcanum Lyceum embedding it in daily life.

Unresolved questions and scholarly debate

  • Elemental bloodlines: Elemental beings and dragons exist; rumours of descent from them are plausible, but how such bloodlines formed (literal lineage, ritual blending, bestowal, or celestial/planar coincidence at birth) is debated. No single explanation is universally accepted.
  • Umbral Veil and magic: The Veil is primarily a source of threat; it may also be the origin of certain Veil-touched practices (shadow magic, forbidden arts) tied to Echo, absence, and unrealized possibility. A working distinction: Ariana's arcane (Resonance) covers most stable traditions; Veil-touched (Echo) practices are rare, risky, and prone to the consequences described under the Law of Resonant Passage.
  • Regional variation: Distinct "first magic" stories for Avaria, Kokoro, Dalr, and Norin remain to be developed with their formation timelines.
